On a whim

Have you ever been leafing through music at a record shop, bought something simply based on looks, and had it indeed be a good buy? Or a terrible mistake?

For example (Both in 2001):

Good buy: Sparklehorse - It's a Wonderful Life.
Result: Complete Satisfaction. Didn't leave stereo for one month. Still peaks it's head out for weeks at a time.

Bad buy: Dashboard Confessional - So Impossible EP.
Result: Ran around in circles screaming, beating self in forehead and chest. Two hours later, burnt it while crying.

for Christmas one year, Linda bought me the Pete Yorn CD simply because I thought he was hot (his pic was the record cover). I had never heard a single song. And while I haven't listened to ole Pete in quite some time, it did make for a summer of good driving tunes. Pete Yorn was a hit (for a season).

Christmas of '63: I remember hearing of Alvin and the Chipmunks band and, perhaps, I may have even heard them once or twice on the radio, but I remember thinking that they didn't sound any different than the rest of the top 40s at the time. Then at Xmas time in '63 I went out to pick up some last minute Xmas gifts at Woolworths and there was the brand new Alvin and the Chipmunks Xmas album. I remembering thinking, "Well what the hell, it's Xmas." So I bought it, flipped the record player to 45 rpms and my heart has been beating at 45,000 rpms ever since. I especially hold their rendition of CHESTNUTS close to my heart. Simon has never carried octave equivalency in D major any better than in that song. Listen for it.
Allllvinnnnnn!

Come to think of it - ten years later I bought another of their albums that was just awful. It was right after the band had come back from some trip to India to meet with the Rishikesh. Everything on the album was acoustic. And Theodore was making the most awful guitar leads. Not to mention how spaced out Alvin's lyrics were: My Nuts Are Diamonds, My Tail Is A Golden Burning Bush, Someone Get Me Out Of This Tree? What the hell kind of lyrics are those!?!
Awful.

I was 20. I remember discovering Coldplay's "parachutes" before anyone had really even heard of them. I liked the name, so I bought the album which turned out to be an extremely worthy musical investment.
On a different side of things, I picked up John Mayer "room for squares" at Target. I listened to the album once, and gave it to my roommate.
